Interactive Fire Safety Learning System

(download/print .pdf file)

OVERVIEW

Each CD*:

·        is designed for K-6th grades

·        is compatible with either Mac or PC formats.

·        incorporates “AUTORUN” simplicity (insert the disc, and the program begins).

·        contains interactive capabilities allowing access to additional content from the Internet.

·        Contains the following key components:

a)      Introduction- Students are introduced to Fire Fighter Bill who explains what is on the CD, helping the child to  (1) understand what they will learn, (2) contents of the CD and (3) how to use the CD.  Throughout the different sections, Fire Fighter Bill helps walk them through each section with simple to understand instructions and a friendly smile.

The “job” of Fire Fighter Bill goes beyond instruction.  Many younger children are fearful when seeing a fire fighter in full fire fighting gear.  One section is specifically designed to overcome this fear, by allowing the student to participate by “helping” Fire Fighter Bill put on the correct equipment to fight a fire.  Every time they add a piece of equipment (jacket, hat, tank, mask, etc.), they are able to see that it is still Fire Fighter Bill.  With his smile and a calming tone, he helps them to recognize a key concept, “Fire fighters are your friends!”  This is just one example of why we designed the program to create a rapport between Fire Fighter Bill and the participating students.

b)      Basics of fire safety in a fun, easy to learn format- Students will be asked to answer a series of questions to confirm that they have grasped the different concepts of fire safety, prevention, escape practices and correct usage of 911.  Upon successful completion of this section, each student can enter his/her name, and print out a personalized copy of their “Jr. Fire Marshall Certificate of Accomplishment.” All of this is done in an automated, step-by-step format, allowing even younger students to complete this section with little or no assistance.

c)      Multiple interactive fire escape simulations- Using actual video footage of smoke filled rooms, hallways, stairs, etc., we’ve created an amazingly realistic experience where students are asked to make appropriate decisions in order to successfully exit the structure.

d)      Additional activities for all age groups- Each disc contains everything from printable maze games, word scrambles, word searches, fill in the blanks and coloring pages to computer-animated games.  Two examples include “On Call” where older students have to navigate a fire truck through one-way streets in order to reach a burning building as quickly as possible, and “Avoid Mr. Fire” where younger students have to navigate through a maze, without touching Mr. Fire, and answer fire safety questions correctly.

One of the highlights for students is the “360 degree Engine 44 Tour,” giving an in-depth virtual experience.  Students can open every compartment to see what’s inside, see a video of the deck gun in action, climb in the cab and sit in the driver’s seat where they can turn on the engine, press buttons and hear sirens, and even go on an actual “Ride Along,” where students will see what it is actually like, first hand, for a fire fighter heading to a real emergency call.

e)      Resource materials- Specifically designed to assist teachers by providing ideas and activities to facilitate learning in the classroom.

* Currently, CD discs will be used in all schools.  An on-line Internet version, requiring only high-speed Internet access in currently in development.
